Background Info:
The farmland and the corporation that runs it is owned by a land trust. In forming a co-operative society on the land, we are able to offer lifelong membership for housing in exchange for part-time work on the farm. Co-op members report to the farm manager for work assignments but are not to be considered skilled employees without training or any necessary certification. This means co-op members are not to be assigned work with heavy equipment or other technical job assignments without the prerequisite training.

Summary:
The Farm Manager will work in conjunction with the farm’s Managing Director (or other Land Trust representative appointed by the trust directorship) in co-managing the farm. There will be regular coordination required between the kitchen manager, the managing director, the co-operative board and the farm manager in order to complete infrastructure projects and to maintain daily work schedules.

Experience:
3 to 5 years experience as farm manager or extensive lead hand experience; willing to work with experienced farm hands who are interested in making the leap to manager.

Job description:
  • Manage the overall operations of the farm, including farm logistics and personnel but not in matters concerning the community kitchen, on-site cooperative housing and cooperative membership.
  • Determine the amount and kinds of crops to be grown and livestock to be raised.
  • Determine any additional facilities, equipment or structures are needed to complete goals and daily tasks.
  • Organize and co-ordinate planting, cultivating and crop harvesting activities.
  • Organize and co-ordinate the raising and breeding of livestock and poultry.
  • Hire/manage/co-ordinate farm personnel, volunteers, WOOFers and co-op members.
  • Create cross-training program between all employees and co-op members, as co-op members will be the weekend/vacation replacements for paid employees.
  • Point contact for all outside contractors and suppliers in coordination with the Managing Director.
  • Work in joint co-ordination with the Managing Director to utilize contractors, employees, visitors, WOOFers, and co-op members in completing infrastructure projects.
  • Perform duties and responsibilities in a manner that leads to positive environmental outcomes.
Compensation
  • Salary: $100,000/year
  • Health: $8,774.24
  • RRSP: $4,000 (4%)
  • Live-In: $6,000
  • Vacation: $5,412.50 (4 weeks to start)
  • CPP: $4,462.90
  • EI: $1148.66
  • Meals provided at community kitchen.
  • On-site housing and company vehicle provided by employer.
    • Total Yearly Compensation: $129,798.30 (amounts are subject to adjustments)
